This time, the Phoenix boys' soccer team was rewarded for its dominance of a match.
After settling for a scoreless tie despite dominating visiting North Valley last week, the Pirates defeated Mazama 1-0 on Thursday afternoon at Colver Field. PHS outshot the Vikings 26-8 and found the net when sophomore Miguel Conchas took a Dan Martinez pass and beat the Mazama goalie in the 70th minute of play.
Phoenix is 7-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 midway through the Skyline Conference season. The victor vaulted the Pirates to first in the Class 4A RPI with five matches to play in the regular season.
Moises Rivera, who has yielded just three goals all season, recorded a clean sheet in the goal, his fifth shutout of the season.
PHS returns to action Monday, hosting Klamath Union.
