The Phoenix boys' soccer team continued to play the kind of defense that could lead to some big things in 2018.
PHS recorded its first shutout of the season, blanking host Marshfield 2-0 in a non-conference match in Coos Bay on Tuesday night. Phoenix improved to 3-0 on the season and has yielded just two goals.
Miguel Conchas and Bryson Flenner provided all the offense Phoenix's Pirates needed, scoring in the 16th and 19th minute of the match. Cain Vargas assisted on Flenner's goal.
Meanwhile, Marshfield's Pirates managed just seven shots, all turned away by Phoenix goalie Moises Rivera, who recorded his first shutout of the season. Joe Navas, Johnny Esquivel, Randy Rodriguez and Conchas joined Rivera in controlling the game defensively.
Ranked second in the state, Phoenix returns to action September 20 when it opens Skyline Conference play at Klamath Union.
